چکیده

In this study the derivation of an objective metrics to appreciate the degree of structuring of written and spoken texts is presented. The proposed metrics is based on the scoring of recurrences inside a text by means of the application of Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA), a non linear technique widely used in other fields of sciences. The adopted approach allowed us to create a ranking of different poems strictly related to their prosodic structure and, more importantly, the possibility to recognize the same structure across different languages, to define a level of structuring typical of spoken texts and identifying the progressive synchronization of a dyadic relation between two speakers in terms of relative complexity of their speeches. These results suggest the possibility of introducing objective measurement methods into humanities studies. Towards a Design Theory for Virtual Worlds: Algebraic semiotics, with information visualization as a case study

We lack scientiic theories that can support the design of virtual worlds, which we construe in a broad way to include graphics-and text-based systems, as well as user interfaces of all kinds. Semiotics would seem a natural choice, but it (1) lacks mathematical precision, (2) considers single signs (e.g., a novel or a lm), not systems of signs, and (3) doesn't address interaction, or (4) social ...

Control of red deer (Cervus elaphus) stag domination in rut season by estrus synchronization

BACKGROUND: Inbreeding is one of the major problems of small size herds of red deer in refuge wildlife parks. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to use estrus synchronization technique in red deer (Cervus elaphus) based on natural mating to control the dominancy and social rank of stags and inbreeding. METHODS: In this study, hinds (n=6) were captured and caged at breeding season (ear...

Neural Phase Synchrony on Understanding Meanings of Symbols

The establishment of symbolic communication system, i.e., making a shared meaning system from meaningless signals, is studied in experimental semiotics (Galantucci, 2005). Local neural activities within a brain region during a symbolic communication task (Konno et al., 2013), where two participants try to establish a symbolic communication system from scratch, has been studied (Li et al, 2015)....

A theory of computer semiotics - semiotic approaches to construction and assessement of computer systems

Semiotics also includes the general principles that underlie all sign systems. It is thus more comprehensive than linguistics--very much more, because there is a semiotic dimension to practically every human artifact. (Indeed, since we can 'read in' meanings to natural events, e.g., as in 'the lack of rain shows God's displeasure,' semiotics is not even limited to human artifacts.) In recent ye...
